Steve Johnson

Went from 9th grade to Haverford College, graduated 1963. PhD in Math from Columbia, 1968 (just missed the riots!). 20 years at Bell Labs, where I helped to develop Unix and the C language, and also did computer music and chip design software. In 1986, came to Silicon valley and worked for a number of startup companies . Back to Boston for 8 years 2002 to 2009, then back to CA for another startup, Wave Semiconductor, and to be near my grandkids.

Since graduate school, I've enjoyed choral singing, and spent many years in an opera chorus in Palo Alto, where I was able to play both a priest and a nun(!). Over the last 10 years, I've become a fairly serious student of meditation ("going native" in CA, perhaps).

My most vivid memory was having the valve stick on my French horn as I tried to play a solo at Oakmont school. Just remembering the sound that came out gives me chills...
